Buffs are temporary boosts or drains on the player's stats and abilities. They can exist achieved by consuming various foods and drinks, or from monster attacks.
Combining Buffs
In general, buffs do non stack, but instead supercede any previous buffs. More specifically, buffs from exactly i food and i drinkable can exist active at a given time. There are some special-effect buffs that are handled separately as described beneath.[ane] Eating a food with buffs will wipe out any buffs from previously-eaten food (only non buffs from a previous drink); 1 drink'south buffs will replace any previous potable's buffs, but accept no upshot on existing nutrient buffs. Foods or drinks that accept no buffs (only restore Health and Energy) tin can be safely consumed without any effect on active buffs.
Only 3 buffs, namely Luck, Speed, and Max Free energy, are available from both nutrient and drink and can therefore be stacked:
- +1 Speed from Coffee or Triple Shot Espresso can be added to the +ane Speed from a food.
- +thirty Max Free energy from Green Tea can exist added to the +30 to +fifty Max Free energy from a food.
- +one Luck from Ginger Ale can exist added to the +one, +iii, or +five Luck from a nutrient.
Special-result and negative buffs ("debuffs") are each handled individually, independently of standard food- and beverage-derived buffs: only i instance of each of these buffs tin exist agile, and they are unaffected past other types of buffs. The special-effect buffs are "Adrenaline Rush", "Oil of Garlic", "Squid Ink Ravioli Buff", "Warrior Energy", "Monster Musk", and "Yoba's Approving"; the negative buffs are "Burnt", "Darkness", "Frozen", "Jinxed", "Nauseated", "Slimed", "Tipsy" and "Weakness".
For example, drinking an alcoholic beverage makes the thespian "Tipsy". Drinking some other alcoholic drinkable replaces the commencement "Tipsy" result with a new ane (the magnitude remains -1 speed, only the duration is reset). Consuming any other beverage or food (including ones with buffs) volition non remove the "Tipsy" effect -- at best, +1 Speed buff (e.g., from Java) can be used to counteract the -1 Speed.
Vitrify Duration
Buff durations are specified on the wiki and in-game using existent-time minutes and seconds.
Buffs will pause while the game is paused, just they will not intermission otherwise even if fourth dimension is paused (e.k., playing the fishing minigame in singleplayer style will still result in any buff durations standing even though fourth dimension is paused).
Typically, 43 real-time seconds are equivalent to one game hour. (7 existent-time minutes are ten game hours.)
Even so, time in Skull Cavern runs more slowly: i game hour lasts 54 real-time seconds. (Except in multiplayer games and on Prehistoric Floors, which revert to 43-second hours). So 1 cup of Java, that usually would last for 2 hours, will only last for one and a half hours in Skull Cavern.
All buffs are cleared once the thespian sleeps.
Preventing negative buffs
Immunity and Squid Ink Ravioli mitigate or prevent the awarding of negative buffs to the player. The Slime Charmer Band prevents the Slimed consequence in item from beingness practical. The Sturdy Ring cuts the duration of negative furnishings that are practical to the player in one-half.

Notes
- There are 2 unimplemented buffs in the game code: Confusion and Stupefied, their descriptions being respectively You feel dizzy... and You can't remember how to use any special moves.[4] Four buffs icons are too unused.[2]
Bugs
- The Squid Ink Ravioli buff doesn't forestall the Tipsy debuff.
- The Squid Ink Ravioli buff doesn't remain active if another food with a buff is consumed later on. Yet, the special vitrify icon is yet shown.
- The Burnt debuff has a -iii Attack debuff which isn't listed in the icon's hover text.
